More and more people are now of the opinion that grades don’t really matter that much. Education is useful for giving you a lot of connections and opportunities to build a career. However, perhaps focusing too much on scoring high grades and ignoring everything else is not the way to go anymore.
Still, grades do matter to some extent. Read on below to find out how and why:
In High School
When you’re in high school, you simply have to keep your grades up. Extracurricular are excellent pursuits at this stage, but many high schools require a certain GPA. If students do not achieve this, they may face expulsion, suspension, or be barred from extracurricular activities.
Hence, even if your interest lies in sports or acting, you have to work at your grades in high school. This would allow you to pursue your interests without worry. Having a solid background in your field of interest would only serve to help you later on.
College Admissions
Your grades also matter when you’re applying for your ideal college or university. Higher education is an amazing tool for those who are looking for a bright career. This is not to say, however, that one has to ace college or even finish it to be successful.
However, the success stories of college and even high school dropouts are quite rare. They do exist, but the individual then has to be extremely brilliant or extremely lucky. Plus, no successful person has ever made it without a staggering level of hard work and commitment.
So when you’re looking to be good at your career, you need to find a good college. And to get in there, you need the required grades. These would not only help you get into the institution you want but may even help in getting you a scholarship or financial aid.
Employment
Depending on your field of choice, your employer may very well take a look at your grades. A low-grade point average does not bode well for several high-level positions. These letters and numbers would be on your transcript, and many employers ask for this document.
High grades in school and college may give you a higher bargaining power for your salary. Who knows, they may even indirectly affect your promotions and benefits package.
Measuring Potential
Grading is a tool for teachers to evaluate the academic performance of a student. In addition, they allow the teacher to review the strong and weak areas of a student.
For students, the significance of grading is about their self-improvement. So if a student gets an ‘A’ in English Literature and a ‘B’ in History, he will work even harder for the later subject.
In a nutshell, grading allows both the teacher and the students to identify the loopholes in their teaching and studying pattern. The idea is to help both teacher and students do the reality check in their respective roles.
Wrap-Up…
Perhaps it is not the fact that grades are so important, but your effort. When you study and do your best, even a low grade can satisfy you. This would be because you would know your capabilities. Hopefully, high or even passing grades would take you to high places!
